Was the Sun an interstellar cloud, or were the forming planets interstellar clouds?

I'm revising this paper for my science class and none of the sources I have found are clear about what exactly an interstellar cloud is. So was it the sun, the planets, or neither? Also, if you happen to know exactly the point a star is considered a red giant, that would be very helpful.Was the Sun an interstellar cloud, or were the forming planets interstellar clouds?
