*Also* is it beleived that other solar systems have an 'oort cloud' too? What can be done within the next decade to prove existence of Oort Cloud?
Hi. Long exposure telescope images should show some of the individual bodies in the Oort cloud. I would be really surprised if the bodies did not extend into the systems of many other stars. What can be done within the next decade to prove existence of Oort Cloud?
My guess is probes. I believe Pluto Express will explore the Kuiper belt but obviously that's still far from the predicted distance of the Oort Cloud.
I see no reason why other stars should not have Oort Clouds, assuming of course that it is a real phenomenon. We've already detected belts of rock and ice around sun-like stars like Tau Ceti and even more massive stars like Vega. What can be done within the next decade to prove existence of Oort Cloud?
We can ask the ALIENS if they had to pass through the oort cloud on their way to visiting us.
Or we could look for more Oort Cloud Objects (OCO) by studying the orbits of comet like objects that extend beyond the Kuiper belt cannot be explained by perturbations from within our solar system and Kuiper Belt. The more we find, the stronger the evidence that either a high gravity interloper orbiting in the Oort cloud (like an undetected brown dwarf) is flinging objects into our solar system or that another star's Oort cloud is overlapping ours.
Yes, it is believed that if our Oort cloud exists, other starts would have oort clouds as well.
